Congratulations to the team, pictured below and to their coaches and parent helpers.
Chesterfield started badly in the opening game letting a goal in after about 20 seconds. However, they gave the perfect response when they replied after only 2 minutes through Ben. Following a nice bit of skill got a good hit on the ball from a tight angle in the circle to bring the scores level. At 1-1, the game was very close with Bridgford slightly on top and having more attacks, but great defending from Danielle and the Chesterfield captain William, kept them out. Chesterfield then had a few minutes with more possession and created a few chances. Unfortunately, about a minute from the end, Bridgford snatched the win with a second goal.
Chesterfield started strongly and were on top in this game, with more possession and creating chances, but could not convert these into goals. During the closing few minutes Lichfield had two penalty corners which were well defended by Chesterfield. At the end, Chesterfield felt they were unlucky not to win the game.
The opening minutes of this game were very even. Luke then showed some good skills to get past three players and get a great through ball to Ben who confidently slapped it in the corner. Chesterfield then had several long corners that were intercepted and cleared by Harborne. Joe won a free hit and Luke slapped it in the circle to win another long corner. Ben then had a shot that was scrambled clear by Harborne, only for Joe to shoot and produce a great save from the Harborne goalkeeper. Chesterfield remained on top with Luke dominating the midfield ably assisted by Joe and Oliver. The closing moments of the game saw a Chesterfield penalty corner dragged out to Luke whose deflected shot fell to Oliver who crossed the ball only for Harborne to intercept well and clear their lines.
Telford started strongly winning the ball from Chesterfield’s push back. Will, Ben and Jono combined well to win a free hit deep into the Telford half. This was hit with power into the Telford circle but cleared from danger. Telford then had a period of possession and several opportunities, and were playing good hockey. Following one Telford attack Stacey in goal produced a fine save. The match ended a hard earned draw which Chesterfield could be well satisfied with, after another great team effort.
The opening minutes saw two Stone penalty corners which we well defended by Chesterfield. There was then a good Chesterfield attack with Luke and Oliver combining well. At the other end there was some superbly calm defending by Danielle on numerous occasions keeping Stone out, and also Dylan who produced two crucial tackles with Stone in dangerous positions inside the Chesterfield circle. Chesterfield finished the stronger of the teams with Alex and Jono going close on couple of occasions. In the closing moments Ben made an excellent reverse stick shot which produced an equally good save from the Stone goalkeeper. This was another even game, so a draw was a fair result.
Chesterfield took on Rugby in their last group game, with Rugby having won all of their games so far in the tournament. The opening passage of play saw Rugby score a lovely goal with super passing. Chesterfield rallied with Luke making a superb long pass to Jono looking dangerous in the Rugby circle, but sharp defending by Rugby closed the Chesterfield striker down and spoiled the attack. Rugby then won a penalty corner and produced a powerful shot from it to make it 2-0. A third goal quickly followed with the Rugby players very good at finding space inside the Chesterfield circle, and Chesterfield not always marking up in defence. Rugby had further chances but Stacey in goal played really well again, making several excellent saves to keep the scoreline down to 0-3. Chesterfield lost to a very good team who Ryan would bet money on winning the tournament.
After finishing fifth out of seven in the group, Chesterfield played their final game in driving rain against a strong Stafford team. The opening exchanges saw Stafford on top, but Chesterfield then came into the game with Ben and Alex making some good attacks, although they couldn’t quite get the final pass away in the circle. Once again Chesterfield were defending bravely with Danielle going off injured, then Oliver. Both players were giving everything for the team to try and keep Stafford out, and both players were OK after a few minutes rest. The closing moments saw Stacey make a good save, and then Luke made a goal-line stop and clearance when for once Stacey was in trouble with a Stafford forward unmarked on far post. The game finished a draw. Unfortunately, Chesterfield’s unbeaten run in three previous penalty competitions then came to an end, despite a save from Stacey and some well taken penalties by Luke and William.
Overall, this was a brilliant run of performances by Chesterfield in seven matches with everyone giving 100%. Well done to all the players.
